Another Saturday Throwback. This One’s Personal.
Every now and then a photo turns up that takes you straight back. This is one of those. A BMW E28 5 Series, dated 10th May 1995, parked on a Cardiff street — and probably the most famous, or most annoying, car in the city that decade, depending on who you ask. Loved that car. It had the maddest system in it of anything on the road at the time.
The car was bought in standard factory blue. It went into the body shop wrapped in a Cadbury chocolate wrapper as the colour reference, and came out painted exactly that — a deep, glossy Cadbury Purple that turned heads every single time it rolled down the street. Underneath that paint, though, was where the real story lived.
That’s commitment to a colour choice.
The System — The List Genuinely Doesn’t Stop
This wasn’t a car with a stereo upgrade. This was a mobile sound system that happened to have wheels attached. Here’s what was actually in it:

The Alpine Cassette Deck — When RDS Felt Like the Future
Before Bluetooth, before USB, before anyone had heard the words “Apple CarPlay” — this was the cutting edge. An Alpine cassette head unit with RDS (Radio Data System) and CD Shuttle Control, capable of running a full 6-disc CD changer from the dashboard. That blue display, those tactile buttons — genuinely state of the art for the mid-90s.
Pair that with a Kenwood 12-disc changer running its own graphic display on the same dashboard, and you had two separate premium source units fighting for space — and somehow both working in harmony. That’s not a budget build. That’s two manufacturers’ flagship technology stacked in one car.
Three Subwoofers, Six Amplifiers and a Boot Full of Bass
Two Alpine 10″ subwoofers and a 15″ Kenwood subwoofer — that famous pink “BASS” branding on the Alpine drivers was instantly recognisable to anyone into car audio at the time. Three subs of different sizes meant three different roles in the low end, all driven by a stack of six Kenwood amplifiers and supported by two batteries because the factory electrical system simply wasn’t built for this kind of demand.
Add four Kenwood 7×10 speakers and two sets of Alpine 5″ component speakers into the mix for the mid and high frequencies, and you had a genuinely full-range system built from two of the biggest names in the industry — installed properly, in a car that became known across the whole city because of it.
Three subwoofers. Six amplifiers. Two batteries. A TV. A video player.
Used to pump the streets like a religion. Twice a day. Every day.

Clifford Remote Start & the Alpine Pager — Security Before Its Time
It wasn’t just about the sound. A Clifford remote start system paired with an Alpine 8200 two-channel pager system meant genuinely advanced security and convenience for the era — long before keyless entry or smartphone-controlled cars were anything close to mainstream. The pager unit clipped to a belt and gave real-time alerts, a genuinely impressive piece of kit for 1995.
The Route — Anyone Who Was There Will Remember
Twice a day, every day, the same loop through Cardiff: Wellfield Road, Albany Road, City Road, Newport Road, St Mary Street — and on from there. Craig Mack, Eric B and Rakim, NWA on repeat through three subs and six amps loud enough to genuinely shake windows along the route.
Those were the days you could drive through the city playing music at that volume before it became impossible — before the council started issuing fines for exactly this kind of thing. A different era of Cardiff entirely. Whether the city loved it or hated it depended entirely on which side of the windows you were standing.
The Best Part of the Story Isn’t the Car
That car is how a lifelong friendship started. He was into audio too — and that shared passion turned into a genuine friendship that has lasted decades. Both of us have built proper careers from car audio since. Both of us still have the same passion for it today that we had stood next to that purple BMW back then.
There aren’t many photos from this era — back then it simply wasn’t the done thing to stop and take pictures of your car. People were too busy actually living it, driving it, listening to it. The few photos that do exist feel genuinely precious because of that. This car was a first love. Genuinely loved that car. It was a huge part of life back then.
