Right Then. Let’s Have an Honest Conversation.
Hi, it’s Waz here from B&B Audioconcepts Cardiff. I hope you’re all well. Now — I’ve touched on this before, but it needs saying again because it’s getting worse. And if you’ve ever walked into a specialist’s workshop armed with advice you found on the internet from someone who has absolutely nothing to do with car audio — this one’s for you.
The world has gone research-mad. And I understand it — I genuinely do. Information is everywhere, and people want to feel informed before they spend their money. That’s completely reasonable. What is not reasonable is spending hours researching car audio specifications from people who have no relevant expertise whatsoever, then coming into my workshop and telling me I’m wrong.

The Research Rabbit Hole — When Information Becomes Confusion
Here’s the pattern I see constantly. A customer decides they want to upgrade their car audio. Reasonable. So they do some research. Also reasonable. But then the research spirals — forum posts, YouTube videos from people who fit audio as a hobby, spec sheets from manufacturers, and — and this is the one that really gets me — advice from content creators who have no professional background in car audio installation whatsoever.
They arrive at my workshop having convinced themselves they know exactly what they need. And when my professional recommendation differs from what a random online source told them, some of them genuinely push back. As if the 35 years I’ve spent doing this for a living counts for less than a paragraph they read on a forum.
I had someone recently quoting sensitivity ratings at me. Decibel figures. Specification numbers from the side of a box. So I asked them — what’s a dB? What does sensitivity actually mean in the context of your specific car, your head unit output, and your listening preferences? Silence. They’d read the numbers but had no idea what they meant or how they applied.
Reading specifications without understanding them is not research.
It’s just confusion dressed up as confidence.
And it rarely leads to the result the customer actually wanted.
The Plumber Analogy — And Why It Works Both Ways
My toilet was leaking recently. I could have watched videos online and tried to fix it myself. But here’s the thing — I know enough to know I don’t know enough about plumbing. So I rang a local tradesman. He came out, fixed it in 20 minutes. Paid him. Done. No stress. Life moves on.
Now imagine if I’d spent hours researching plumbing techniques, convinced myself I understood the problem, and then turned up at his door telling him what tools to use and which approach was correct — based on a YouTube video I’d watched. He’d have been rightly baffled.
That’s exactly what some customers do to us. And here’s the thing I want to be very clear about — I’m not dismissing your right to ask questions. Questions are great. Come in with ideas. Tell me what you like, what you listen to, what result you want. That’s a conversation I love having. What winds me up is when someone comes in and tells me I’m wrong based on advice from a source that carries no professional credibility in this field whatsoever.
What 35 Years of Experience Actually Looks Like
From a young age, I’ve been building car audio systems. Back in the day my setup was Focal speakers, Genesis amplifiers, JL Audio subwoofers. We used to absolutely rock it. The brands and technologies have evolved since then — some have moved up, some have moved down — but what hasn’t changed is the approach.
I mix manufacturers. Most shops don’t — they stick to one brand because it’s easier. I buy the best of this, the best of that, the best of something else — and when I put it together for your specific car, your specific budget and your specific listening taste, I get a result. That’s not luck. That’s 35 years of understanding how components interact with each other and with real vehicles in real conditions.
I design systems around what the customer actually listens to. Someone who listens to Metallica needs a different system to someone who listens to R&B, jungle or podcasts. The frequency emphasis is different. The driver requirements are different. The way the system is tuned is different. I know this because I’ve been doing it every single day for decades — not because I read it somewhere.
Specifications Don’t Tell the Whole Story
A product’s spec sheet tells you what it can do under laboratory conditions. It doesn’t tell you how it performs in your specific vehicle, with your specific head unit, in your specific acoustic environment. That knowledge comes from fitting these products every day and understanding how they behave in the real world.
Experience — Not Just Products
Anyone can sell a box with a speaker in it. What B&B Audioconcepts sells is the knowledge of which box — and which speaker — will actually deliver the result you want in your specific car. That’s a completely different thing. And it’s why our ratings are what they are.
I’ll Always Tell You If I Don’t Know
I’m not always right. Nobody is. If there’s a product or a situation I’m not familiar with, I’ll tell you straight — I don’t have experience with that, let me find out more. Honesty over ego, always. But when it comes to what I know — which is a lot — trust the experience.
The Result I Actually Want for You
Here’s what genuinely drives me. Over the years — back when there wasn’t nearly as much online information available — customers used to come in and just tell me what they wanted to feel. They wanted to rock. They wanted deep bass. They wanted to listen to their playlist and feel something. And I’d design a system around that.
And when they came back? They’d say — mate, this is it. This is exactly what I wanted. I feel young again. That result is what I’m here for. That’s what gets me out of bed. Not fitting a box someone bought online because a forum post told them it was the best value. Not doing a job I know won’t deliver what the customer deserves because they’ve already committed to a product that isn’t right for their car.
When a customer lets me do what I know how to do — that’s when the results are extraordinary. And that’s when they come back. And tell their friends. And that’s how B&B Audioconcepts has built the reputation it has.
So Here’s What I’m Asking
Come in. Have a conversation. Tell me what you listen to. Tell me what you want to feel when the music plays. Tell me your budget. Bring your ideas — I genuinely welcome them. If you’ve seen something you like, show me. That’s all brilliant input.
But trust the expertise that’s in the room. Not the spec sheet. Not the forum post. Not the content creator who has never professionally installed a car audio system in their life. The person in front of you who has been doing this every single day for 35 years and whose entire professional reputation depends on getting your result right.
Think about it this way — when you go to a doctor, a solicitor, an architect or any other professional, you share the information you have and then you listen to their advice. You don’t tell them they’re wrong because you spent two hours on Google. The same principle applies here.
