Rolls Royce Apple Carplay and Android Auto Wireless

The owner and CEO of B&B Audioconcepts joked on his social media that it was Lord Waz and not Lord Aleem on this occasion as a beautiful and elegant Rolls Royce Ghost chauffeured  in for some much needed technology upgrades and some serious security upgrades. This is not the first rolls Royce that B&B Audioconcepts have worked on as you will know if you follow them on social media or the current work section of this website.
The Audioconcepts team started off with fully integrating  Apple Carplay and Android Auto into the existing Rolls Royce entertainment system without losing any original Rolls Royce factory controls. The connection to Apple Carplay and Android Auto is fully wireless. Naturally this gives you access to all your mobile phones apps and brings full endless multimedia capabilities to your Rolls Royce Ghost.
Moving onto the security upgrades the Audioconcepts team added a Meta s5 deadlock tracking system with immobiliser and remote app.
Finally the team added a Thinkware Q1000 twin cctv with speed camera database and Bluetooth app, with 2K quality this really is an incredible device incorporating a host of features which you can read further below in our review.

Rolls Royce Apple Carplay and Android Auto Wireless

Thinkware Q1000 Dash Camera

The Thinkware Q1000 is the latest dash cam from Thinkware to capture 2K QHD footage using Thinkware’s latest Super Night Vision 3.0 with HDR and Dewarping technology. Built-in Bluetooth 5.0 makes pairing your smartphone to the mobile app a breeze – you can play back videos or adjust settings on the fly. Compatible with the Thinkware Connected service, the Thinkware Q1000 is equipped with an impact notification system, which will send an SMS alert with footage to a pre-programmed mobile if the camera’s G-sensor detects a significant impact.

Q1000 Key Features:

  • 2K QHD @ 30FPS
  • 156° field of view
  • 5.14MP Sony STARVIS image sensor
  • Super Night Vision 3.0
  • True HDR Technology
  • Dewarping Technology
  • Parking Surveillance mode
  • Radar Module compatible
  • Device pairing via Bluetooth
  • Safety Camera Alert
  • Road Safety Warning System
  • Thinkware Connect app
  • HEVC format H.265

Thinkware Q1000 Video Quality

Equipped with the 5.14MP Sony STARVIS IMX335 image sensor, the Q1000 records 2K QHD @ 30FPS from both the front and rear cameras at a 156° field of view, covering the better part of the area around the vehicle while minimizing blind spots. You also get the option in the app to downscale the front camera to 1080p Full HD for recording at 60 FPS.

Note the rear camera is an upgraded BCQH-300 model, which is different from the BCQH-200 used by the Thinkware U1000 or X1000 – the difference? Both rear cameras have the same image sensor, but the BCQH-300 sports newer hardware better suited for the newer processor in the Q1000.

The rear camera is not the only improvement the Q1000 brings – it comes with Thinkware’s latest Super Night Vision 3.0, which combines Digital Overlap High Dynamic Range (DOL HDR) and Noise Reduction technology to reduce noise and lens flare effect that typically affect night-time footage.

Thinkware Q1000 Parking Surveillance

Like all other Thinkware dash cams, the Q1000 has built-in voltage monitoring to monitor your car battery’s health continuously. It will shut down if it detects any issues, so your car battery will not over-drain.

Regarding parking features, you get the standard motion and impact detection with buffered recording, and time-lapse recording. Energy Saving 2.0 is also available on the Q1000, and it will significantly reduce power consumption and provide up to 72 hours of parking mode runtime.

You can extend the standby period to up to 576 hours or 24 days when you pair the Q1000 with a dedicated battery pack – but you won’t get pre-impact footage. For that, you will need to use the optional Radar Module.

Is it heat resistant?

The Thinkware Q1000 comes with integrated thermal protection. Built-in thermal sensors and supercapacitor technology provide added safety and reliability in extreme temperatures, so your Q1000 is better protected from overheating, which can cause potentially irreversible damage to it or its data.

Furthermore, the Q1000 offers the Smart Parking Mode. This parking feature prevents heat-related damage by automatically switching the Q1000 to a low-power mode if the temperature inside the vehicle gets too high during parking mode. When activated, the Q1000 records incidents only until its operating temperature is safe again to resume motion detection or time-lapse parking mode.

Advanced Driver Assistance System and Safety Camera Alerts

With a built-in GPS antenna, you get data such as date and time, driving speed, and GPS coordinates on your footage. You also get a wide variety of alerts and warnings from the Q1000, such as red light warnings, speed camera warnings, mobile speed zone, and more, as well as safety warnings like forward collision warnings, front vehicle departure warnings, and lane departure warnings.

When paired with the optional Thinkware Connected service, you open up even more alerts and notifications, all while the Q1000 is still recording your drive.

Best connectivity with dual-band WIFI with Bluetooth 5.0

Say you want to view and manage your videos on your smartphone and do not need the Thinkware Connected features, then you will be using the Thinkware Dash Cam Link app – it lets you replay your latest driving videos and manage your dash cam’s settings with the apps.

One of the common complaints about Thinkware dash cams is problems connecting the app and dash cam, and we are happy to see that Thinkware is attempting to resolve the issue with a couple of improvements: dual-band WIFI and built-in Bluetooth.

With dual-band WIFI, your iOS or Android smartphone can connect to the Thinkware Q1000 via the 2.4 GHz or 5GHz bandwidth for faster file transfers. Built-in Bluetooth allows hassle-free dash cam pairing with your compatible Android or iOS device via the Thinkware Link App and the Thinkware Connected App. But you must ensure your phone is not already connected to another device via Bluetooth – this includes the CarPlay in your car or your Apple Watch if you use one.

Meta System has over 40 years’ automotive industry experience, manufacturing more than 7 million telematics devices since 2010. They are dedicated to on-going innovation and development at their state of the art tech facility.

Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK is the most comprehensive vehicle security and connectivity system on the market, with 24/7/365 theft monitoring delivering you security and peace of mind whilst offering a comprehensive range of driver convenience features for life on the road.

Developed in response to the staggering increase in vehicle thefts, Meta Trak S5 Deadlock combines advanced immobilisation with Meta Trak’s new generation tracking technology, 24/7 control room monitoring and an easy-to-use app.

The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK protects you against the very latest theft methods:

Relay Attack – Without ever entering your home, or touching the car’s key, thieves are able to open and start your vehicle and drive it away in just seconds.

Two transmitters or ‘relay’ boxes are used by the thieves; one is held close to your car and the other near to where you keep your key. This way, the signal produced by your key is lengthened, fooling the car into thinking the key is actually present.

OBD Compromise – The thief plugs a technical device into your car’s diagnostic socket (OBD port) and fools the vehicle into thinking that your original key is present, or programmes a new key.

Key Cloning – A particular threat to non-keyless entry cars, your key is cloned, or copied.

Key S5 Deadlock features include:

  • Automatic Immobilisation – The advanced immobilisation solution arms automatically when the engine is turned off – no need to phone a call centre or worry that you have forgotten to arm the immobiliser. When you are ready to drive off, simply press the ID tag to disarm the system.
  • Remote Deadlock Immobilisation – Putting you in complete control and taking security to another level, Remote Deadlock Immobilisation can be activated via your smartphone app or web. Once activated, the vehicle cannot start, even with the ID tag present. Should you lose your ID tag, then you have the reassurance of being able to disarm the system via the smartphone app.
  • Driver ID Tag – If any attempt is made to move your vehicle without the ID tag present, an instant alert will be sent to you and to Meta Trak’s secure operating centre (SOC). Operating 24/7/365, the SOC will contact you to confirm whether the movement is unauthorised and will begin tracking your vehicle and liaising directly with the police.
  • Live Tracking – Stay in control. See the real-time position of your vehicle. Our advanced location technology delivers market leading performance and accuracy.
  • 24/7 Monitoring – Our National Security Inspectorate Approved Secure Operating Centre (SOC) monitors your vehicle continuously for greater peace of mind.
  • Instant Alerts – Keep in the know. Immediate notification of a change to your vehicle’s status. Receive alerts for low battery, battery disconnect and get service reminders.
  • Journey History - Review up to 30 days journey history.
  • Geo Fencing – Set up geo-fencing and receive notifications when your vehicle moves into or out of the geo-fenced area or breaches a set speed limited.
  • Choose Mode – Use the Meta Trak app to select your mode. Choose options such as privacy, service, transport or garage mode.
  • UK & EU Coverage – Whether at home or abroad. Our service provides you with coverage in UK and Europe.
  • Thatcham Approved – Our solutions have been evaluated and accredited by the Thatcham Research Centre* and fully comply with the requirements of your insurance company.

What is Apple CarPlay?

CarPlay was launched in 2014, but was based on the pre-existing “iPod Out” functionality. In a Porsche, iPod Out made it possible to plug an iPod into your multimedia system and listen to your music collection through your vehicle’s stereo system. At the same time, the current track or playlist could be shown on the screen, and controlling your iPod — skipping tracks, for example — could be done with your vehicle’s native multimedia controls.

As iPods gave way to far more capable iPhones, Apple was able to revisit its iPod Out technology, and rebuild it with considerably more features. Rather than simply controlling music playback, the new system, dubbed CarPlay, would be able to leverage the full power of an iPhone to run a wide range of apps, including music, messaging and navigation. By creating an interface between your smartphone and your Porsche’s multimedia system, CarPlay lets you enjoy the best of both worlds: the versatility of an iPhone and its broad app ecosystem, combined with the convenience of the dashboard display and in-vehicle controls.

Though CarPlay lets you run many of the same familiar apps you might already be using on your iPhone, the system is optimised for in-car use. That means a new menu design that’s better suited to using behind the wheel. CarPlay does support touchscreens in compatible vehicles, but the system works equally well with the buttons and knobs found on most cars’ dashboards.

Apple Carplay Maps in Rolls Royce

Powered by the Apple Maps app on the iPhone, Maps within CarPlay lets users get detailed turn-by-turn directions to help them navigate. The CarPlay interface clearly displays the route, driving instructions, traffic conditions, and visual cues for upcoming turns. Estimated time of arrival is also included, along with an estimate of driving time and distance until the destination is reached.

Maps draws in location information from apps like Messages, Calendar, and Mail, and it also includes previous searches made on iOS. For example, if a user has a specific location for an upcoming meeting stored in the Calendar app, Maps pulls that info into the CarPlay interface. Maps also allows for voice commands through Siri, so it’s possible to ask Siri to find a gas station, a museum, or a specific address. In iOS 10, Maps gained traffic alerts and alternate routes to save time in traffic-heavy areas.

As of iOS 12, CarPlay works with third-party Maps apps like Google Maps, giving CarPlay users an alternative to Apple Maps. Many map apps have adopted CarPlay support following the update, including Google Maps, Waze, and others.

Apple Carplay Phone in Rolls Royce

With the Phone app, it’s possible to ask Siri to dial calls, return missed calls, and listen to voice mail. The CarPlay Phone app also has a keypad so numbers can be punched in on the touchscreen, but for the most part, calls can be initiated by asking Siri to dial an existing contact.

A user might say, “Call mom,” for example, to place a phone call over the car’s speaker system. In-car controls are also used alongside the touchscreen for functions like muting calls or initiating conference calls.

Apple Carplay Messages in Rolls Royce

As with phone calls, sending a message is reliant on Siri. Messages are dictated aloud to the voice assistant, with Siri confirming the content of the message to ensure accuracy before sending. When a response is received, Siri asks if the user wants it read aloud and then gives the option to send another text message, with the entire interaction being voice-based to prevent users from looking at their iPhones while driving.

Sample commands within the Messages app include “Read message from Kelly,” or “Send message to mom,” followed by the message content.

Apple Carplay Audiobooks in Rolls Royce

The Audiobooks app is part of the iBooks app and lets users listen to audiobooks in their vehicles.

Apple Carplay Music in Rolls Royce

The CarPlay Music app allows customers to access content that has been downloaded from iTunes, the Apple Music streaming service, and the free Beats 1 radio station. Like other CarPlay apps, the Music app’s interface is immediately recognisable, with access to Artists, Songs, and Playlists. With Siri, it’s possible for Apple Music subscribers to play a specific songs or artists on-demand with commands like “Siri, play Beyonce.”

Apple Carplay Podcasts in Rolls Royce

With the Podcasts app, CarPlay users can listen to their downloaded podcasts. The CarPlay interface is similar to the interface on iOS devices and should be immediately familiar to those who frequently use the Podcasts app.

Android Auto in Rolls Royce

Connect your phone to your car display – your Android apps show up onscreen, just like that. Tap to get driving directions or talk to send a text. Even call your mum, hands-free. Android Auto is made to help you focus on the road. And have fun along the way. Just plug in and go.

With the Google Assistant on Android Auto, keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. Use your voice to get help with your day. You can find routes, play your favourite songs and even check the weather. Just say “Hey Google” to get started.

Get real-time alerts with Google Maps, Waze and more of your favourite mapping apps. Even ask Google Assistant to find petrol along the way, check EV charging availability or book a parking reservation for when you arrive. You can see it all on your car’s dashboard display, helping you know more about what’s nearby. Just say where to. And then go.

Your Google Assistant can read your messages out loud. And you can write back by talking. From making calls to using chat apps with just your voice, Android Auto makes driving less distracting.
