Some jobs arrive with a modest brief and a remarkable story. This Mazda MX-5 came into the B&B Audioconcepts Cardiff workshop for what was described as a simple but quality audio upgrade. The customer shows the car — a show build being developed piece by piece — so anything that could be on display, should be on display. That was the brief.

The car already wore a stunning new metallic green paint job. The interior was being upgraded gradually. And the audio needed to reflect the same level of care and attention the rest of the build was receiving — quality without excess, chosen correctly for the car’s character.

We got started. Then somebody popped the bonnet. And the whole workshop stopped.

The Bit We Weren’t Expecting — That Engine Bay

A Jaguar-derived supercharged engine — Rotrex supercharger, carbon fibre intake manifold covers, Japspeed front panel — sitting in the engine bay of a Mazda MX-5 as if it was always meant to be there. Beautifully executed, clearly the work of someone with real passion and real skill. Every component fitted with the same attention to detail you’d expect from a professional build.

This isn’t a car with a thumping stereo installed just for noise. This is a car that has been built with genuine craft — and the audio needed to match that standard. Quality components, correctly installed, chosen to complement the character of the build rather than overwhelm it.

Focal Polyglass PS 165 V1 — More Volume Than Anyone Expected

The Focal Polyglass PS 165 V1 is one of the most respected entry-level component sets in the Focal range — and in a compact two-seater like the MX-5, it absolutely came alive. Focal’s signature polyglass cone construction delivers a warm, natural sound character with excellent midrange clarity and a tweeter that sings without ever becoming harsh.

The MX-5’s small, intimate cabin works in the Focal’s favour — the listening distance from driver to speaker is minimal, and the acoustic space is tight enough that even a modest speaker fills it completely. Driven by the Phoenix Gold amplifier, the volume output genuinely surprised us. That is not a phrase we use often, and it is a great thing to say about a budget-conscious build on a Friday afternoon.

Phoenix Gold ZXM400.4ISO — Compact Power, Zero Fuss

The Phoenix Gold ZXM400.4ISO is a miniature Class D 4-channel amplifier that punches well above its physical size. 100W per channel at 2 ohms, full Class D efficiency meaning minimal heat and battery draw, and a plug-and-play ISO harness that makes installation clean and straightforward. In an MX-5 where space is at an absolute premium, compact form factor matters enormously. The ZXM400 delivers proper amplification without demanding the space of a traditional unit.

Pioneer with CarPlay — Keeping It in the Era of the Car

The head unit choice was deliberate and correct. Rather than fit a large modern touchscreen that would look out of place in the MX-5’s period dashboard, we chose a Pioneer double-DIN with CD and Apple CarPlay. The CD player keeps the car feeling right for its era — show car builds deserve that authenticity — whilst CarPlay and DAB bring it completely up to date for daily use. Period look, modern function. Exactly as it should be.

The Pioneer volume control was relocated out of the standard position and mounted in a custom panel where the ashtray used to sit — on display, as the customer wanted, and a neat detail that adds to the show car presentation inside the cabin.
