What is Apple CarPlay?
CarPlay was launched in 2014, but was based on the pre-existing “iPod Out” functionality. In a Porsche, iPod Out made it possible to plug an iPod into your multimedia system and listen to your music collection through your vehicle’s stereo system. At the same time, the current track or playlist could be shown on the screen, and controlling your iPod — skipping tracks, for example — could be done with your vehicle’s native multimedia controls.
As iPods gave way to far more capable iPhones, Apple was able to revisit its iPod Out technology, and rebuild it with considerably more features. Rather than simply controlling music playback, the new system, dubbed CarPlay, would be able to leverage the full power of an iPhone to run a wide range of apps, including music, messaging and navigation. By creating an interface between your smartphone and your Porsche’s multimedia system, CarPlay lets you enjoy the best of both worlds: the versatility of an iPhone and its broad app ecosystem, combined with the convenience of the dashboard display and in-vehicle controls.
Though CarPlay lets you run many of the same familiar apps you might already be using on your iPhone, the system is optimised for in-car use. That means a new menu design that’s better suited to using behind the wheel. CarPlay does support touchscreens in compatible vehicles, but the system works equally well with the buttons and knobs found on most cars’ dashboards.
Apple Carplay Features
The CarPlay interface is designed to be immediately familiar to anyone who has used iOS on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Connecting an iPhone to CarPlay through a Lightning cable brings up an iOS-style interface on the in-car display that offers a home screen complete with apps like Maps, Phone, Messages, Music, Podcasts, and several third-party offerings.
Apps are accessed via touch screen, through Siri, or through various in-car controls that might be located on the steering wheel or other location depending on the car manufacturer. On aftermarket offerings from companies like Pioneer and Alpine, physical controls are limited to buttons on the in-dash system unless special adapters are installed.
Though apps can be launched through touch-based controls, actions like sending a text message, making a phone call, or changing a music track are largely conducted through Siri. There is no on-screen keyboard, for example, so text messages are transcribed by voice much as they are when using dictation to send messages on an iPhone.
What is Android Auto?
Android Auto has been around for quite a while now, and it’s pretty common in modern-day cars. For those of you who are unaware, Android Auto is an app that you either need to install or comes pre-installed on your Android smartphone, which allows you to connect your phone to your car’s entertainment system. It works either through a cable or wirelessly, to help make things easier while driving. You can make and receive calls, send text messages, reply to them via voice input, use navigation, run third-party apps, etc, all on an interface that’s easy to use and less distracting while driving.
THINKWARE U1000 4K DASH CAM
The Thinkware U1000 4K Dash Cam is the new Flagship camera from Thinkware. It’s one of the most advanced Dash Cameras currently on the market and is the upgrade from our bestselling DashCam, the Thinkware Q800. The U1000 comes as either a Front Only System or Front & Rear System. It’s twice as powerful as the original Q800!
With a Full 4K Front and QHD Rear camera, the U1000 is able to record pristine quality video that captures the crucial details of any incidents you may encounter while driving. Recording at 30 frames per second without dropping a single frame, you can rely on the U1000 to capture every moment of your commute in high definition – be it an accident or an unexpected hit-and-run.
The U1000 also features ‘Super Night Vision 2.0’, a night image correction feature, and ‘Time Lapse’ that dramatically extends the parked recording hours. This new model will also have a new Energy Saving Parking Mode in conjunction with the Optional Radar Sensor. The Radar System will be available later this year but in principle means that your Dash Cam will detect impacts before they happen and will allow your dashcam to stay asleep longer and therefore meaning parking mode will be extended before cutting out.
Dual Save technology is specially designed to save recorded footage in both the microSD memory card and the built-in internal memory in incident recording, safeguarding against the loss of data in the aftermath of a severe collision. In the event that the memory card is damaged, the Dual Save Technology guarantees a backup copy of the video in the internal memory.
Your smartphone and the U1000 can be connected via the exclusive application ‘THINKWARE DASH CAM Mobile Viewer”.
You can Check, download or delete recorded images, update firmware or update safe driving information on the application.
